I'm Sick and Tired of Steak for Dinner

I am ONE MILLION BAZILLION percent positive that we are not the only pet owners whose dog is a persnickety eater. Our 8 year old German Shepard, also known as PRINCESS McKayla, has us jumping through hoops every night trying to entice her to eat her dinner in a timely manner.

Despite the fact that she has food allergies, and I spent months and months doing food trials to finally find the right dog food that wouldn't cause her to itch like crazy, we still try to "spice it up" by adding different things:

FISH: Salmon; Codfish; Shrimp; Calamari; Tuna
MEAT: Rump, Goulash, and T-Bone Steak; Ground Beef; Scrambled, Fried, Boiled, and Poached Eggs; Duck
CHEESE: Feta, Mozzarella, Raclette, Cottage, Cheddar
YOGURT: Plain and Greek
VEGETABLES: Sweet potatoes; Potatoes; Peas; Broccoli; Spinach; Green beans
GRAIN: Pasta; White & Brown rice

Mind you, everything is cooked in olive oil and always served hot! Yet still, night after night, we prepare her food, place it in her bowl, and hold our breath while she walks over...sniffs..and REJECTS!!! It's only with reluctance, and after 30 min or so, that she indulges us and starts to take a few bites. And the ONLY time she eats without any hesitation, is when we serve Confit de Canard, which is a rarity we only buy ourselves on special occasions.

Tonight we tried a different approach, having her work for her food by giving her commands (i.e. sit, stay, come here, lie down, etc) before she was allowed to eat a few bites. And even though it worked for 75% of the meal, I was still forced to mix in our diet cat food to get her to eat last lousy bit.

We love our girl, and wouldn't trade her for the world, but we would love to know if someone else has any suggestions, or at least a funny story to share!

  2. Can't believe how well McKayla eats - when she chooses too! I've never known a dog that was a picky eater. My dogs always vacuumed up everything, practically before it hit the floor.9
